Contemporary witnesses shed light on denazification: A look back in Kusel!

A fascinating event! On Sunday, numerous curious people flocked to the Kinett cultural center in Kusel for the third edition of the contemporary witness conversation “How it was,” organized by the support association of the local history and city museum. The focus was on the turbulent period of denazification and the French occupation.

The debate over denazification was inflammatory: after the Second World War, the Allied victorious powers had scrutinized the public service, the police, the judiciary and the economy. But opinions about the effectiveness of these measures vary widely. A contemporary witness advocated the theory that denazification was in many cases “a joke” – an apt assessment that sparked discussion among the audience.

Coming to terms with the past

What was particularly exciting was the lively discussion among those present, who dealt intensively with the topics. The event not only offered a look back into history, but also the opportunity to raise the relevant questions of our time. Was denazification really as half-hearted as some claim? What impact did the French occupation have on local society? The answers to these questions remain of great importance to many and will continue to generate keen interest in the future.
