Reading competence in danger: Rotary helps cochem cell children!

In the district of Cochem-Zell, those responsible with concern observe the decreasing reading skills of elementary school students in Germany. The current IGLU study of 2023 shows alarming results: Over a quarter of the fourth graders do not reach the necessary standards in order to be able to read successfully. Specifically, it is 25.4 percent of the students who leave primary school without the necessary reading skills, a worrying increase compared to 2001 than it was 17 percent.

In response to these disappointing numbers, the Rotary Club Cochem-Zell has decided to become active. With the guiding principle "Learn to read - learn to live!" want to promote the reading skills of second graders. This includes giving away paperbacks to the students who can come into possession of their first book. This is an important step, because the motto should ensure that no child is excluded and everyone can participate in the project.

long -term support of reading skills

Since the beginning of the reading projects in 2004, around 8,500 children have received a book in this district in the second school year. In addition, more than 4,500 children have been participating in a literary project for classes 3 and 4 since 2007. A total of around 13,000 students have been achieved by this initiative in recent years.

In order to implement these projects successfully, the Rotary Club has invested a total of around 58,000 euros in the promotion of reading skills. However, this sum would not have been possible without the help of external sponsors. Banks from the region, the Lotto Foundation, the Workers' Association VEM and BVK-Verlag have repeatedly supported generously in recent years. The Rotary Club is grateful for this valuable cooperation and financial backing.

This year 15 primary schools have already joined the Rotary Club's reading project. The handover of the books took place in Cochem primary school. During this event, members of the club read passages from the project books to tune the school classes on the reading project and to arouse the interest of the students.

The efforts of the Rotary Club to strengthen the reading skills of young people show how important education and reading ability are in everyday life. In view of the continuously falling reading performance, the initiative is more than necessary. The various regional partners and sponsors play an important role in continuing to secure the projects financially.

This initative is a valuable step in the right direction to promote interest in books and reading yourself and thus to sustainably improve the educational opportunities of children. This will not only benefit the individual students, but also to society as a whole by using a reading -loving and educated generation. The perspective that children discover the fun of reading could have long -term positive effects on their academic achievements and reading habits.
