Political earthquake in Austria: FPÖ-ÖVP coalition whirls everything up!
In Austria, the political mood is bubbling: After a triple coalition between the ÖVP, SPÖ and Neos, a comeback from Sebastian Kurz could come into play. Paul Ronzheimer, biographer of the former Chancellor and deputy editor-in-chief of BILD, sees a "political quake". He outlines the possibility that the leading heads in the ÖVP - given the growing challenges - could briefly send again into the race and Karl Nehammer are pushed out of the picture. "It is not out of the question that he could plan a comeback in a few years," said Ronzheimer in 2021. This development could not only influence Austria, but also the entire EU, as Ronzheimer emphasizes in his comment on the current political turbulence.
FPÖ goes to confrontation course
In the meantime, the freedoms, led by Herbert Kickl, shamelessly use the uncertainties in government formation. After the coalition negotiations burst, they shoot against ÖVP boss Karl Nehammer and demand his resignation. Kickl describes the failed "traffic light" as "political miscarriage" and criticizes Nehammer: "Karl Nehammer was voted out by people on September 29. He has not accepted it for over three months." The FPÖ feels strong through the developments and sees itself in its course against the established parties. However, Ronzheimer warns of the further consequences of this situation and sees the radical political currents in the upward. The fears of a strongly extremism climate are loud, in particular by the FPÖ, which maintains closer connections to identities. Ronzheimer emphasizes that the FPÖ is considered a model for the AfD in Germany, which could significantly influence political dynamics in both countries. Should the freedom actually jump into the government, this could not only result in national but also European consequences. "Kickl could soon sit next to a German Chancellor in Brussels and put Veto against sanctions against Russia," said Ronzheimer.
