Car overturned on Großglocknerstrasse – driver remains unharmed!

In the early morning hours of June 4, 2025, there was a spectacular traffic accident on Großglocknerstrasse in the municipality of Iselsberg. A 51-year-old man was driving from Winklern towards Irschen around 1:15 a.m. when his vehicle went over the right edge of the road. The car overturned and ended up on its roof in an adjacent meadow. Fortunately, the driver was able to free himself from the vehicle and was uninjured.

An uninvolved road user immediately started the rescue chain. The alerted emergency services were quickly on site to provide assistance. Two police patrols from Lienz and Winklern as well as several fire departments were involved in the operation. The following forces were deployed:

  • Feuerwehr Lienz: drei Fahrzeuge, 17 Feuerwehrleute
  • Feuerwehr Winklern: zwei Fahrzeuge, zwölf Feuerwehrleute
  • Feuerwehr Iselberg-Stronach: zwei Fahrzeuge, elf Feuerwehrleute
  • Rettungsdienste Winklern und Lienz mit Notarzt

Total damage to the vehicle

The condition of the vehicle after the accident was devastating as the car was found to be a total loss. Despite the dramatic situation and the massive damage, the driver was able to leave the accident vehicle uninjured. The rapid deployment of rescue workers prevented the worst consequences.

These types of accidents highlight the importance of road safety. According to that Mobility Forum Road safety in Germany is controlled through regular accident prevention reports. These reports have been an important tool for improving road safety since their introduction in the 1970s.

The aim of these regular reports is to use the findings to continuously update federal road safety strategies. The latest programs cover the years 2021 to 2030 and show the importance of preventative measures to avoid accidents and ensure the safety of all road users.

Current incidents like the one in Iselsberg should therefore serve as an impetus to pay more attention to road safety and, if necessary, support preventive training and information campaigns. An effective road safety strategy can not only prevent accidents, but also save lives.
