In the early afternoon of October 8th, a major water rescue operation became necessary in Mainz when a car was discovered in the Rhine. At 4:29 p.m., the emergency services from the Mainz fire department, supplemented by units from surrounding communities and various aid organizations, responded to the Mainz-Laubenheim NATO ramp.
The firefighters who were called in were informed that a car was supposed to be in the Rhine. A resident met the emergency services on site and led them to the scene of the accident. He reported that the vehicle was spotted in the water for the first time that morning.
Focus on water rescue
Fortunately, it turned out that there were no people in the vehicle. The fire department divers ensured that the car was secured to prevent it from drifting further. Once secured, the site was handed over to the water police, who will now carry out further investigations to find out how the car got into the Rhine and who the owner is.
The entire operation lasted until around 6:50 p.m. and involved around 40 emergency services, including members of the professional fire brigade as well as the volunteer fire brigades and the rescue service.
