PENNY fights against food waste with Sweet Savior Bags”!
The food sector is under international pressure to reduce the immense waste of food. In this context, the discount chain PENNY today announced the introduction of the “Sweet Savior Bag” in all branches. This innovative offer aims to save excess seasonal confectionery before it is thrown away.
The “Sweet Savior Sack” is offered for 8 euros and contains at least ten seasonal confectionery products, including both branded products and own brands. These products usually have a long shelf life and are of impeccable quality, which makes the initiative particularly valuable. Every year, around 635,000 tons of food end up in household waste in Austria, with bread, confectionery and baked goods particularly affected, as Kosmo reports.
Food waste and environmental consequences
Global food losses and waste not only represent a major problem for food supplies, they also have significant negative impacts on the environment. A third of global food production is lost or thrown away, meaning resources such as land, water and energy are unnecessarily wasted. The consumer advice center emphasizes that due to avoidable food losses, around 30% of the available cultivated land worldwide remains unused.
According to Ernährungsradar, around 11 million tonnes of food waste are generated every year in Germany, with around half of this waste being avoidable. Private households are responsible for 59% of this waste. In addition, avoidable food waste in the EU produces climate-damaging gases on a scale equivalent to the annual emissions of the entire Netherlands.
Strategies to reduce waste
In view of these alarming figures, it is crucial to support initiatives such as the “Süße Retter-Sackerl”. Food that is often excluded simply because of its external appearance does not meet social standards of beauty and therefore ends up in the trash. These standards contribute significantly to food waste, as noted by the FAO, which classifies about 1.3 billion tons of food as lost or missing each year worldwide.
Policy measures to reduce food waste are urgently needed. While countries like France have stricter laws on food donation, Germany relies on voluntary commitments. This shows the need for better legal certainty to encourage food donations and reduce waste.
In summary, PENNY's initiative not only helps reduce food waste, but is also a step in the right direction to create awareness and use resources wisely. Consumers are encouraged to take an active role in reducing food waste for a sustainable future.
