Christmas tree season starts: NRW presents the largest plantations!

The Christmas season is just around the corner, and that doesn't just mean festive spirit, but also the great search for the perfect Christmas tree. This year, an impressive 16,000 hectares of coniferous trees are being offered for the festival in North Rhine-Westphalia. How country.nrw reported that around a third of the almost 30 million Christmas trees sold in Germany every year come from this region. Minister Gorißen ceremoniously opened the season and emphasized the importance of regional products.

Decline in imports

The number fell by 18.6 percent compared to the previous year to 763,000 trees. Denmark was the main country of origin, followed by Poland and the Netherlands. In the fields in North Rhine-Westphalia, especially in the Hochsauerland district, where the largest cultivated areas are located, regional production has become more important.

For many consumers, quality and freshness play a crucial role when purchasing their Christmas trees. The Nordmann fir, which is particularly popular because of its soft needles, is at the top of purchasing decisions. The trend is increasingly towards ecologically certified trees; a sign of the times when sustainable farming methods play a role beyond the holidays.
