Refurbishment of the underground car park: What does that mean for parking in Remscheid?
In Remscheid there is an urgent need for action in relation to the underground car park under Theodor-Heuss-Platz. Drivers have been struggling with the consequences of moisture damage since 2022 after the city reacted to indications of dangerous defects. Around 400 parking spaces are currently available, but these restrictions are subject to ensuring security for users.
The problems with the underground car park have been known for more than two years. The city has already taken measures to minimize potential risks, especially with regard to the use of heavy equipment above the affected area. Winter service had to be stopped on snowy days. Popular events such as the weekly market and the ice rink were also moved to other locations due to the static problems.
Expert took the system under the magnifying glass
In order to get to the bottom of the causes of moisture, experts were commissioned to examine the equipment in detail. However, the first results were not enough, which is why an experienced specialist office was consulted, which also removed rock samples for analysis. According to Armin Freund, the managing director of Park Service Remscheid GmbH, clarification of the situation is expected, but so far there is no intermediate score. The experts should not only name the causes, but also make recommendations for action.
Freund also repair the effort that will be necessary to renovate the garage. The next results are expected for mid -December, and excitement will be taken to see how serious the problems are and which measures will be required.
Refurbishment in several sections
A comprehensive renovation of the underground car park will be inevitable, and it should be carried out in several sections instead of setting up the entire operation. Park Service Remscheid sees itself as responsibility to take into account the interests of customers who rely on parking spaces during their working hours. Nevertheless, it will be necessary to prioritize the short parkers during the renovation work, which could lead to a temporary restriction of the space.
The plans for the renovation of the underground car park are closely related to the planned redesign of Theodor-Heuss-Platz. The city administrations aim to make this place not only functionally but also visually appealing in order to create more green areas and a higher quality of stay. Planning approaches have already been presented to local politicians, with a budget of between 3.2 million euros for the renovation. Funding should be applied for, which means that the city of Remscheid only has to take over a share of 20 percent.
The votes between the city administration and those responsible for the underground car park are therefore of great importance in order to carry out the work synchronously and achieve optimal results. This could have a positive impact on the future use of Theodor-Heuss-Platz. Mayor Burkhard Mast-Weisz expressed the need to quickly put the plans into practice because this place is considered a central area in the city center.
The current state of the square itself, which is mainly paved and without an appealing design, is to be improved in the long term through new measures. The upcoming work on the underground car park is the perfect opportunity to transform the appearance and functionality of Theodor-Heuss-Platz.
