Remscheid opens one-way streets for cyclists: A step towards a traffic turnaround!
Remscheid. The city administration of Remscheid is planning a revolutionary change: one-way streets will soon be accessible to cyclists in both directions! From Brüderstraße to Marienstraße to Alleestraße – what is forbidden for drivers becomes a new freedom for cyclists. The goal? Getting more people on bikes while protecting the environment!
The amendment to the road traffic regulations (StVO) makes it possible! One-way streets can be opened to two-way bicycle traffic if certain criteria are met. These include a maximum speed of 30 km/h, no buses on the route and a lane width of over three meters. Traffic planner Burkhard Fey is enthusiastic: “This is an opportunity to achieve improvements for cycling in the very short term.” In Remscheid, all 140 one-way streets are checked for these conditions, and ten are already open to cyclists in the opposite direction.
These streets should be opened to bicycle traffic in both directions
The first streets are already on the list! In Alt-Remscheid, in addition to Marienstraße, Bankstraße, Recreationstraße, Winkelstraße and Julius-Spriesterbach-Straße could also be opened to cyclists in both directions. A small disadvantage: three parking spaces on Marienstrasse have to make way for a protective strip. The costs for the new signs and markings amount to around 5,000 euros, and the Alt-Remscheid district council has already unanimously approved!
ADFC Remscheid praises opening as 'excellent'
The ADFC Remscheid is thrilled with this decision! Spokesman Andreas Roeschies describes the opening of the one-way streets as “excellent”. “The realization that the dangerous situation is low and that an opening in the interests of cyclists is possible is gaining ground,” says Roeschies. Remscheid is facing a new era for cyclists - a step in the right direction!
