Remscheid opens one -way streets for cyclists: a step to the turn of traffic!
Remscheid. The city administration of Remscheid is planning a revolutionary change: one-way streets should soon be accessible to both directions! From Brüderstraße via Marienstraße to Allestrasse - which is prohibited for drivers, cyclists become a new freedom. The goal? To put more people on the bike and protect the environment at the same time!
The amendment to the Road Traffic Regulations (StVO) makes it possible! One -way streets can be released for opposing bicycle traffic if certain criteria are met. This includes a maximum speed of a maximum of 30 km/h, no regular buses on the route and a road width of over three meters. Traffic planner Burkhard Fey is enthusiastic: "This is a way to achieve improvements in cycling at very short notice." In Remscheid, all 140 one -way streets are checked for these conditions, and ten are already approved for cyclists in the opposite direction.
The first streets are already on the list! In Alt-Remscheid, in addition to Marienstraße, Bankstraße, recreation road, Winkelstraße and Julius-Spriesterbach-Straße could also be opened for cyclists in both directions. A small disadvantage: In Marienstrasse, three parking spaces have to give way for a protective strip. The costs for the new signs and markings amount to around 5000 euros, and the district council Alt-Remscheid has already approved unanimously!
ADFC Remscheid praises opening as 'excellent'
The ADFC Remscheid is enthusiastic about this decision! Spokesman Andreas Roeschies describes the opening of the one -way streets as "excellent". "The realization that the dangerous situation is low and that an opening in the sense of cyclists is possible prevails," said Roeschies. Remscheid stands in front of a new era for cyclists - a step in the right direction!
