The focus: Seminar inspires beekeepers in Gummersbach!
Gummersbach, Deutschland - An exciting seminar on bee health took place on October 24, 2024 in the "Hohenzollernbad" in Gummersbach, organized by the district beekeeper association Oberberg (KIV-O) in cooperation with the Oberbergische Kreis (OBK). Renowned speakers such as Prof. Dr. Robert Paxton, Dr. Pia Aumeier and Dr. Horst Wehrle informed the beekeepers about current challenges and developments in beekeeping. Norbert Herod, the 1st Chairman of the KIV-O, emphasized the urgency to promote healthy bees and addressed the fight against Faulbrut, Varroa and other threats.
The online lecture by Prof. Dr. Robert Paxton, an expert in bee research, who illuminated the complex problem of bee viruses. Paxton, who has been teaching at the University of Halle for over a decade, has made a name for itself in researching social evolution and host parasite relationships. Its expertise is of crucial importance, since the western honeybee (Apis Mellifera) is faced with numerous dangers, including the dreaded Varroa mite and invasive species such as the Asian hornets (Vespa Velutina).
Current challenges for beekeepers
The biologist Tatjana Puchberger presented the invasive large -scale Vespa Velutina and explained its biology and fishing methods. This species has already gained a foothold in Oberberg, which alerted the beekeepers and called for increased vigilance. Dr. Pia Aumeier, a well -known figure in the beekeeper scene, brought the participants closer to the latest knowledge of treatment concepts and demonstrated their extensive knowledge with impressive lightness. Your courses are always fully booked and attract beekeepers of all levels of experience.
The event also offered space for questions and the exchange of experiences, whereby the synergy between practical beekeeping and scientific research was in the foreground. At a time when nature is constantly changing and the bees come under pressure, it is essential that beekeepers and scientists are working together on solutions. The challenges are great: pesticides, the loss of habitats and diseases threaten the survival of honeybees. But with united forces and the exchange of knowledge, beekeeping can be strengthened.
