Münster will become the center of the hydrogen revolution in NRW!

Muenster. North Rhine-Westphalia has ambitious goals: The region aims to become the first climate-neutral industrial region in Europe. In this context, hydrogen plays a crucial role, along with green electricity. On October 2nd, members of the H2 Working Group led by District President Andreas Bothe and Dr. Fritz Jaeckel, General Manager of the North Westphalia Chamber of Industry and Commerce, has taken an important step towards achieving this vision. You have adopted a position paper in the Münster district government that is intended not only to strengthen the region, but also to support the ambitions of the state government.

The H2 Working Group is optimistic about the conditions for building a hydrogen economy. She sees the administrative district of Münster, which is identical to the IHK district of North Westphalia, as a central hub for the nationwide hydrogen core network. The geographical location is advantageous because the region is between the windy areas in the north and the larger company locations on the Rhine and Ruhr. This could make Münster an important hub for future hydrogen networks.

Central demands of the position paper

The position paper that has now been adopted, which will be made available to the public in the foreseeable future, sets out a number of central demands. This includes the expansion of the line infrastructure and the development of regional distribution networks. Another focus is on making hydrogen usable for heat supply and offering reliable funding for H2 mobility, which should also be accessible to smaller companies.

The composition of the H2 Working Group is particularly noteworthy. This was launched on the initiative of the district government and brings together various stakeholders from business, science, politics and administration. Their common goal is to network the actors who are dealing with the topic of sustainable hydrogen and to identify both local needs and potential in order to make the topic known nationwide.

In view of the opportunities presented, District President Andreas Bothe expressed confidence: "This work is important because hydrogen is a component of sustainable energy supply. It is here that we decide whether the hydrogen economy will be able to ramp up successfully. There is hardly any other region that has better starting conditions for this."

Dr. Fritz Jaeckel reiterated the group's ambitions by pointing out that the H2 Working Group wants to set the essential course for the H2 ramp-up. "Together we are driving forward the development of the necessary infrastructure and international networking. This is the only way we will be able to establish the region as a key player in the hydrogen transformation and thus shape the future of energy supply sustainably," said Jaeckel.

With the position paper, the H2 Working Group not only aims to strengthen its own position, but also intends to increase awareness and attention for sustainable hydrogen. The members agree that the success of this initiative could be crucial for the development of the region and the entire hydrogen economy in Germany.
