Richard Schirrmann, a teacher from the region, had the sparkling idea to found this hostel over 100 years ago - inspired by a thunderstorm that surprised him during a hike. The student who was looking for a while was finally protected in a school, which made him think about the importance of access to safe accommodations for travelers.

The first youth hostel opened its doors in 1914 and was a revolutionary facility that offered young people the opportunity to discover the world and experience community there regardless of their social and financial background. The German youth hostel was founded in this modest castle just five years later and reflects Schirrmann's vision of offering young people adventure and memories.

The Altena Castle, which was built in the 12th century, enthroned majestically on a mountain spur and originally served to protect iron production in the area. Over the centuries, however, she lost importance and changed the owner several times. Since 1943 it has been part of the Altena district, which later became a Märkische Kreis.
