Snow chaos in the Rhineland: Cologne awaits up to 15 cm of fresh snow!

In the night of Thursday, January 9, 2025, the first snowfall fell in North Rhine-Westphalia, especially in Cologne. A snow cover at Cologne Airport was measured by one centimeter, and the German Weather Service (DWD) predicted that further snowfalls in the Rhineland are possible on Thursday morning.

The expected amounts of snow vary depending on the region: 1 to 6 cm are forecast within 6 to 9 hours in deeper locations, 1 to 6 cm, between 4 and 10 cm and in the parameters of the mountains. In Cologne, slight snowfall is expected from around 9 a.m. to around 3 p.m., at daily maximum temperatures between 1 and 4 degrees and moderate wind from a north -west direction, which turns west during the day.

Already on Wednesday evening, January 8th, the DWD announced intensive snowfall for North Rhine-Westphalia, which was to spread north from the south. In higher altitudes, fresh snow between 10 and 15 cm was expected, while in the lowlands of 1 to 5 cm snow or snow gather. The first snowfall concerned the south of the state and should be used in the evening.

The DWD also warns of the rainfall on the streets in the affected regions. In the night of Thursday, the snowfall spreads out on medium and northern parts of the country. It remains that the temperatures are between 1 and 4 degrees and the snowfall continues to the afternoon.
