Cologne Marathon 2024: Road closures and traffic warning on October 6th!
On October 6, 2024, Cologne will be the venue for one of the biggest sporting events of the year - the Cologne Marathon. This event not only attracts around 25,000 runners, but also hundreds of thousands of spectators to the city. With this in mind, traffic conditions will be significantly affected on marathon day with numerous roads closed.
Preparations for the marathon are in full swing and as runners focus on the final details of their preparations, drivers are wondering how best to deal with these changes. With a distance of 42 kilometers, the marathon covers a large area in Cologne and therefore many traffic routes are affected.
Extensive road closures
The city of Cologne and the organizer, Generali, have already published a detailed list of road closures, which will come into force primarily on the marathon day itself. Numerous streets will be closed from around 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., although there may be additional temporary closures between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. Some road closures are scheduled throughout the day.
- Am Malzbüchel: 7 bis 17.30 Uhr
- Am Kümpchenshof: 7 bis 17.30 Uhr
- Amsterdamer Straße: 10 bis 17 Uhr
- Alteburger Straße: 9 bis 14 Uhr
- B9 – Agrippaufer: 9 bis 13 Uhr
- B9 – Habsburgerring: 7 bis 17.30 Uhr
- B55 – Aachener Straße: 7 bis 14.30 Uhr

- Komödienstraße: 6 bis 23.59 Uhr
- Venloer Straße: 7 bis 15 Uhr
- Vogelsanger Straße: 7 bis 15 Uhr
Public transport affected
Public transport is also not affected by the road closures. The Cologne Transport Authority (KVB) has already announced that there will also be significant restrictions on various bus and tram lines on marathon day from 7:30 a.m. to around 6:45 p.m. In order not to prevent spectators and participants from traveling, the city recommends using public transport.
The following KVB lines are affected:
The city of Cologne has pointed out that on marathon day it makes sense to use public transport early to avoid delays and inconveniences. Since many roads cannot be used, longer waiting times at the stops are to be expected.
Drivers who rely on cars and want to drive through Cologne on October 6th are recommended to find out about the diversions in advance and plan alternative routes. Information about current traffic closures is also available on www.24rhein.de visible.
The Cologne Marathon 2024 is expected to be an exciting urban event, but the high number of participants and infrastructural challenges also bring challenges for mobility in the city. However, those who watch the marathon from a different perspective will be able to enjoy the festive atmosphere and the sporting spirit of the event.
