Asbestos album in Hamm: residents of Hoppeistraße again affected!
After a dramatic fire in the former colliery site in Hamm, which had the alarm bells ring on Monday, the residents of Hoppestrasse are again severely affected. Instead of pollutant water, like ten years ago, the residents now have to fight asbestos finds! The city has taken immediate measures to minimize the dangers for the residents and pronounced a ban on entering seven properties and houses on Hoppestrasse and Goerallee.
The city of Hamm immediately responded to the "urgent recommendation" of the State Office for Nature, Environment and Consumer Protection NRW (LANUV). Asbestos -containing fragments from the burned -down cooling tower have loaded the land and required immediate cleaning by a specialized company. According to city spokesman Tom Herberg, asbestos were found on 20 properties, but only for seven there was a ban on entering, since the risk of larger fragments is particularly high. "The residual risk is increased because fragments can continue to crumble and release asbestos fibers," said Herberg. The residents are now looking forward to the results of the dust and air samples that were taken in their houses.
fire brigade in action and safety precautions
The Hamm fire brigade was on site with over 60 emergency services and more than a dozen vehicles to combat the fire and carry out the clean -up work. Special protective suits were necessary due to the danger situation. Fire chief Daniel Hüwe explained that all emergency services who may have come into contact with asbestos were registered and their protective clothing was securely packed. In contrast to blue asbestos, in which cleaning would not be possible, the contaminated clothing can now be cleaned by certified companies.
The cleaning of the affected properties and the subsequent work on the mine site is still imminent, but the safety of the residents has a top priority. The city will do everything possible to enable a quick but secure return process for the affected residents, while at the same time contaminating the dangers from asbestos.
