Gelsenkirchen. A very special day for Rudolf Hess! On December 5, the vigorous senior celebrated his incredible 104th birthday and attracts everyone's attention. The jubilee, who lives in the Belia senior residence in Buer, is the second oldest man in all of Gelsenkirchen - only three months younger than the oldest citizen of the city. A truly biblical age that he celebrates with a bright smile and lively interest in the world around him!

Rudolf Heß, born on December 5, 1920, witnessed world history up close. From the political upheavals of the 1920s to the challenges of modern times - his life story is a fascinating testimony to contemporary history. Surrounded by friends, family and the district mayor Dominic Schneider, this day of honor was duly celebrated. "Another is three months older than Mr. Heß," said city spokesman Martin Schulmann, who underlined the importance of this special occasion.

Rudolf Heß, who has only lived in the senior residence since autumn 2023, has previously spent many years in Gladbeck. His niece Beate Kronfeld traveled from Straubing to congratulate her "Uncle Rudi". "He always visited us until his 99th birthday - all by train!" She enthuses. This shows his remarkable independence and vitality that accompany him into old age.

his secret for a long life? Movement! Twice a week gymnastics, regular swimming pool visits and even saunas were on his training plan. "The Uli is my sports fan and a pre-gymnast," reveals Hess in the WAZ interview. His experiences from World War II, when he suffered and survived a stomach, also shape his life story. After the war he worked as a surveying technician and finally found his home in the Ruhr area. On his special day, he was happy about the visit of his son Andreas from Dublin and the congratulations of his loved ones.
