Putin signals dialogue readiness: What does Trump's victory mean for Ukraine?
Moskau, Russland - Moscow is in turmoil! After Donald Trump's triumphal victory in the US presidential elections, the Kremlin is open to discussions about Ukraine-even with Chancellor Olaf Scholz! However, Kremlin spokesman Dmitri Peskow rejected a report by the Washington Post, who says that Trump and Putin talked on the phone last Thursday. "There was no conversation," said Peskow and described the message as "pure fiction". Nevertheless, Russia remains ready to search for the dialogue.
President Vladimir Putin was optimistic about a public appearance in Sochi on the Black Sea and congratulated Trump on the election victory. He emphasized that he did not want to be the first to call because the West broke off the contact. Trump, who promised to end the Ukraine conflict quickly in the election campaign, stood out of Putin, according to anonymous sources, not to escalate the war. The concerns about the US military aid to Ukraine, especially among Joe Biden and the Ukrainian government, who fear that Trump could hire support.
Scholz and Putin: No contact in sight
The Kremlin has also made it clear that despite multiple announcements by Chancellor Scholz, there have been no signals for a phone call with Putin. Peskow was skeptical: "If you say that signals come, we have to wait for you. So far there has been none." Scholz himself had explained in the ARD that he wanted to speak to Putin "soon", but could not act alone. Such a conversation must also be made in agreement with Ukraine.
The Situation remains tense, while the Kremlin perceives a certain nervousness in the west after Trump's election victory. Peskow warns that it is premature to speculate about changes in the positions of the Europeans. "There are official explanations of European representatives who speak of the continuation of their general line to provide all types of support," said Peskow. For Russia, this means that weapons continue to be pumped into Ukraine to continue the war.
