Drama in the AfD NRW: Power struggles and scandals threaten to blow up the election!
In North Rhine-Westphalia there is a lot of simmering within the AfD! There is no end to the power struggles within the party as the party finds itself in turbulent waters. Led by Martin Vincentz, who has positioned himself as the moderate face of the AfD, the situation appears to be anything but stable. The public prosecutor's office is currently investigating Klaus Esser, the former deputy parliamentary group leader in the Düsseldorf state parliament, for forging documents. Esser is said to have posed as a lawyer and, for example, created manipulated memberships in the Düren district association, which already raises clear doubts about his integrity Republic Blog reported.
The nominations for the direct candidates for the upcoming federal election are causing additional tension. In the Dortmund II constituency, Mattias Helferich was nominated, a controversial member of parliament who describes himself as the “friendly face of the NS” and is well connected in the state executive board. At the same time, there is ongoing party expulsion proceedings against him. Roger Beckamp, another member of the Bundestag and AfD chairman in the Housing and Urban Development Committee, was also nominated in Rhein-Sieg District II. Both candidates are in the crossfire of criticism because they are allegedly acting against the state executive board. He refuses to sign the confirmation of her candidacy, which only further fuels the internal conflicts WDR reported.
Radical currents are coming under pressure
At the same time, Vincentz is trying to distance himself from the right-wing extremist currents within the party, which have continued to lose influence due to the inconsistencies in Thuringia. The exclusion of leading members of the youth organization “Junge Alternative”, which is classified as right-wing extremist by the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution, shows that Vincentz is not afraid to take tough measures. Nils Hartwig was expelled from the party, while expulsion proceedings were initiated against Elia Sievers after he made controversial statements about the deportation of a Yazidi woman. These developments are hitting the AfD's wall hard and raising the question of how long the party structures can withstand the internal pressure.
