David Wagner becomes the new youth manager at RB Leipzig – Klopp is following suit!
Manuel Baum and RB Leipzig have parted ways amicably. June 30 is announced as the official end date for Baum's role as junior leader. Baum is leaving the club for personal reasons, which makes his decision all the more understandable. In the succession takes over David Wagner, a long-time friend of RB Leipzig's current head of football, Jürgen Klopp, took the position.
Wagner, 53 years old, is and has been active in various coaching positions in the past, including at Huddersfield Town, where he was responsible for promotion to the Premier League. His last stop was at Championship club Norwich City, where he was head coach until May 2024. The collaboration ended after missing promotion to the Premier League. Wagner achieved a record of 1.47 points per game in 75 games.
Experience in the youth sector
In his new role at RB Leipzig, Wagner will draw on his extensive experience in the youth sector. Before his professional career, he worked at TSG Hoffenheim and Borussia Dortmund. His time as coach of Dortmund's second team from 2011 to 2015, parallel to Klopp's time as head coach, is particularly striking. Wagner and Klopp continue to maintain close contact, including through joint lectures on youth development.
Klopp himself has been in charge of football at RB Leipzig since the beginning of the year. Wagner's commitment is intended to increase the permeability of talent in Leipzig. Sports director Marcel Schäfer praised Manuel Baum for his commitment within the club and showed understanding for the former youth leader's decision.
Background and context
The coaching situation in the Bundesliga is always a dynamic topic. Since the 1963/1964 season, the number of coaching changes in the top leagues has changed again and again. This continuity and change is exciting, especially given RB Leipzig's specific situation and the influence of figures like Klopp and Wagner in the youth sector. Jürgen Klopp is committed to further increasing the quality and development of talent in Leipzig, which will be strongly supported by Wagner’s expertise.
