Every third student in Münster has immigration history!
In Münster there is an alarming development: Almost every third student has a migration background! Statistical surveys of the State Office IT NRW show that in the school year 2023/2024, exactly 30.9 percent of the students in this big city have immigration history. In comparison to other cities of North Rhine-Westphalia, Münster ranks in the lower midfield. But what does that mean for the educational landscape?
comparison of the regions
While Münster with its 30.9 percent share is in the middle area, there are striking differences within the country. In the district of Coesfeld, which is known for its homogeneous population, the proportion of students with a migration background is less than 23 percent and thus the lowest. But the difference is not only conspicuous in Coesfeld - in Wuppertal the proportion skyrocketed to almost 59 percent! These numbers raise questions about integration, educational justice and the challenges of the education system.
The importance of this data cannot be emphasized enough! These statistics are crucial to develop solution strategies to promote equal opportunities in schools. One wonders what measures need to be taken to better meet the needs of these students and to enable even more successful integration.
