Hündfelder Moor: Citizens' participation for renaturation starts soon!
Hündfelder Moor: Citizens' participation for renaturation starts soon!
A spectacular project to rewind the "Hündfeld Moores" between Ahaus and Gronau picks up speed! On November 8, 2024, the Biological Station Zwillbrock submitted the application for planning approval for the life project "Retailing of the Bündfeld Moores Crossborderbog" at the Borken district. This important raised bog, which was affected by active peat mining until 1979, is now to be renatured in cooperation with the Dutch Landschap Overijssel. Citizens are invited to submit their opinions and statements from November 25th to January 24th, 2025 - a unique chance of participating!
important details about the project
The project area extends over impressive 410 hectares, with 154 hectares on the Dutch side in the "Aamsveen" and 256 hectares in the Borken district in the "Hündfeld Moor". The aim is to optimize the water balance in order to promote the growth of the raised bog. By creating dams and polders, the water outflow should be slowed so that the water can penetrate into the peat - a decisive measure for the restoration of the ecosystem!
With a budget of around 13 million euros, divided between Germany and the Netherlands, the project is supported by the European Union and the Ministry of Agriculture and Consumer Protection North Rhine-Westphalia. The term extends from July 2023 to June 2029. Retailing will not only improve the habitats for protected species, but also significantly reduce carbon dioxide emissions. The bitch field moor could again develop into an important carbon sink and regain its original ecological function!
for further information and to actively participate, citizens can view the application from November 25, 2024 via the online portal NRW or comment directly on the city of Gronau and Ahaus. Take the opportunity to become part of this important environmental project!
