Sickness reports in Aachen are rising to record levels – the focus is on psychological stress
The current figures from Aachen show an alarming trend: last year the number of sick notes rose to a record high. According to the Barmer Health Institute, employees in Aachen were on sick leave for an average of 20.8 days, a slight increase compared to the previous year with 20.7 days. The numbers are particularly interesting across the entire city region, where colds and respiratory illnesses remain high due to the lifting of corona restrictions.
In the city region, the average days of absence are 26.8, which is also an increase compared to 2022 with 26.5 days. These figures affect a total of 10,400 insured people in Aachen and 15,700 from the city region who are insured with Barmer. Compared to the NRW average of 23.2 days, these statistics show that the region is well above the national average.
Reasons for the high number of sick notes
Brigitte Jansen, managing director of Barmer in Aachen, pointed out that mental illnesses are one of the main causes of the high level of absenteeism. In 2023, employees in Aachen were unable to work for an average of 5.4 days due to psychological stress. Last year it was 4.9 days. A similar trend can be seen in the city region, where the number of days due to mental illness increased from 5.9 to 6.7 days.
This development is particularly worrying as it points to a growing problem in the healthcare system. The impact of the coronavirus pandemic continues to be felt, and the associated stress appears to be affecting the mental health of many people. The increase in respiratory diseases in 2023 shows that the health crisis is far from over and this puts further strain on the health system.
The numbers are a clear appeal to employers and healthcare facilities to take a closer look at the causes of mental illnesses and take preventive measures. Creating a healthy working environment can make a significant contribution to reducing the number of sick leaves and improving the quality of life of employees.
