Discussion about New Year's Eve fireworks: safety or fun?

In Wilhelmshaven, the environmental committee is planning a first meeting on February 5th, in which the topic of “New Year’s Eve fireworks in Wilhelmshaven” will be discussed. The motion to add this topic to the agenda was submitted by the council group Win@WBV, Berner, FDP and FW. The aim of the discussion is an open-ended debate, not a ban on firecrackers. Councilor Stefan Becker (Win@WBV) emphasizes the need to provide food for thought.

Becker gives two main reasons for the request. Firstly, there is a nationwide petition for a ban on firecrackers with almost two million signatures. Secondly, Becker continues, the experiences from New Year's Eve are negative, especially on the stock exchange. He describes the situation as “war-like conditions” with firecrackers being thrown and blank pistols. Many restaurant guests sought safety indoors after midnight.

Results of the meeting and discussions

Becker calls for a sensible discussion on the topic, without emotional heating. He suggests allowing fireworks in certain places and banning others, as well as setting clear time windows. In addition, a discussion is encouraged about possible alternatives to classic fireworks, such as the DUH reported.

The discussion in the Environment Committee should provide an important forum to discuss the different views on the issue of New Year's Eve fireworks in the city and to find possible solutions.
