Schaumburg is fighting deficit with 38 million euros - what now?
District of Schaumburg faces a financial disaster! A shocking deficit of 38 million euros will be predicted for 2025. "We have never had that - a dramatic development," said District Administrator Jörg Farr (SPD) during the introduction of the draft budget. The numbers are alarming: the planned yields amount to around 493 million euros, while expenses increase to around 531 million euros. District treasurer Oliver Krah already warns more considerable deficits in the coming years.
The causes of this worrying situation are diverse. "We are in a sandwich situation - the federal and state governments apply the debt brake and the municipal family has too little money," criticized Farr. The effects of Corona and the Ukraine War have massively restricted the financial scope of the municipalities. Despite the gloomy location, those responsible emphasized that there would be no “clear cutting in the social area”. Ignored problems could lead to even greater challenges and costs in the future.
Financial challenges and priorities
For 2025, unbound yields of 186.3 million euros are expected. A significant part of the income comes from the circular levy, which is applied by the municipalities. This levy has been constant at 51.8 points since 1997. The financial resources are urgently needed to cover the grant in areas such as family, youth and social aid. Group spokesman Eckhard Ilsemann (SPD) emphasizes the need to set the focus to secure the future of the district, especially in the areas of economy, infrastructure, climate protection and education.
Health care in rural areas remains a central concern. The district has already taken measures to improve medical care, such as creating a regional supply center. But the challenges are great, and those responsible are under pressure to find solutions to ensure financial stability.
