Osnabrück, Deutschland - in Osnabrück there was a state of emergency on Sunday! After over 15 hours of intensive bomb clearance, around 14,000 residents were finally able to return to their apartments. Mayor Katharina Pötter (CDU) described the situation as a "novelty", as seven suspicions had to be examined in one day - a record for the city that has already experienced many bomb defusations.
bombs from the Second World War defused
The experts were dealing with British and American explosives from the Second World War. The defused bombs included three British 500 pound bombs, two 100 pound bombs and a massive 1,000 pound bomb. A suspicion turned out to be less dangerous: a smashed 500 pound bomb had to be defused. But the evacuation was not without difficulty: some residents refused to leave their houses, which delayed work by up to two hours. The police had to intervene and initiated 39 administrative offenses.
evacuation and chaos in the city
The evacuation concerned not only the districts of Fledder and Schinkel, but also the city center, where 8,650 households and around 300 trade were affected. The main train station was closed during the clearance work and the train was redirected trains. In the Schinkel comprehensive school, the city set up an evacuation center in which up to 500 people were temporarily housed. There was even an unexpected event during the chaos: a pregnant woman gave birth to her child in the Marienhospital without getting a little from the bomb defusations.
