New animal shelter in Ribbesbüttel: City of Gifhorn is planning a big investment!

Gifhorn. An exciting chapter for the animal protection association Gifhorn and the surrounding area begins! The path for the construction of a modern animal shelter in Ribbesbüttel is paved. After the fundamental commitment to financing has already been granted in May, the decisive details are now on the agenda of the city of Gifhorn. The city has to take part in the project financially, because the accommodation of fund animals is one of its mandatory tasks.

Time is crowded! The rental agreement for the current animal shelter expires on August 31, 2025, and the landlord does not want to extend. The new accommodation on Winkler Straße is urgently needed, since the current conditions no longer comply with modern regulations for species -appropriate animal husbandry. Around 10,000 square meters for the new animal shelter are to be provided here, with special areas for dogs, cats and small animals, as well as administrative and sanitary rooms. All of this must be completed until the deadline!

Financial hurdles and cost

But the project has its price! The city of Gifhorn has to adjust to a total cost of around 4.23 million euros, including the property, planning and construction. The purchase of the property alone costs 600,000 euros, and a further 100,000 euros are required for a left -turn lane required by the district. An important question remains: does the association have to pay 7 or 19 percent sales tax? This could significantly influence the city's grants that can fluctuate between 1.28 and 1.42 million euros.

The city administration emphasizes that the new building by the association is the most cost-effective solution. Alternative models would not only be more expensive, but also associated with higher personnel costs. The ongoing operating costs are expected to remain in the same framework as in previous years, which means that the city of Gifhorn still has to bear a large part of the costs. The discussion about the financing will continue on Monday, November 11th, in the committee for fire brigades and public order. An exciting project is in the starting blocks!
