Volunteer technology pilots: seniors digitally fit for everyday life!

In Dörpen, a group of eight committed volunteers have prepared for their first mission: They will support older people as media and technology guides! This initiative, which was carried out as part of a training course at the Emsland Senior Support Center (SPN), aims to make it easier for seniors to access the digital world. The coronavirus pandemic has increased the need for digitalization, but many older people still struggle with using smartphones and tablets. This is where the new pilots come into play!

The participants received comprehensive training in 24 intensive teaching units. Under the guidance of lecturer Werner Heyart, they learned everything about setting up devices, internet connections and installing apps. “How do I explain applications to seniors that I take for granted?” asked one participant, emphasizing the importance of using simple language. This sensitivity will be crucial in removing older people's fear of technology. "We pick up the seniors where they are and take them with us. This is a wonderful task," added another participant.

A strong network for digital participation

The participants praised the respectful treatment and mutual support during the course. In order to promote exchange and networking beyond the training, the Emsland district regularly organizes network meetings for the 40 active media and technology pilots in the district. The contact persons Daniela Fischer and Kerstin Knoll are available to provide further information and support the new pilots in their operations. This initiative is an important step towards bridging the digital divide and enabling older people to live independently!
