A 41-year-old driver of a van wanted to turn from Heiligenfelder Straße to the B6, but overlooked the truck of a 59-year-old. The main traffic artery, which connects Bremen and Hanover, was blocked for several hours due to the accident, which led to considerable traffic impairments.

diesel accident causes environmental damage

The collision also had serious environmental consequences because the truck's tank was torn open. As a result, hundreds of liters of diesel flocked to the road and into the adjacent soil. In order to remove the expired fuel, the Heiligenfelde fire brigade and the special dangerous goods relay had to move. According to a fire brigade spokesman, it was estimated that about 700 liters of diesel had to be pumped out of the damaged tank to fix the danger situation.

In parallel to the cleanup, the emergency services also took over the extensive securing of the accident site. The investigation into the exact cause of the accident continues to run. The replacement of the contaminated soil is also considered because the diesel fuel came into the ground and could possibly be a risk to the environment.

The full blocking of the B6 and the associated damage can be considered particularly problematic because they interrupt an important flow of traffic. After a few hours, a partial opening of the street could be set up, but the situation remains tense because work at the scene of the accident is still going on.

The police have already initiated the first investigative steps to clarify the exact circumstances of the accident. The full technical investigation could provide further insights into why the van did not perceive the truck and thus caused the collision.
