Bloody knife attack in Mannheim

The consequences of the crime have sparked an intense debate about how to deal with foreign criminals and the need for increased deportations. The Federal Prosecutor's Office has taken over the investigation and assumes a criminal motive. The incident and its deadly outcome raise concerns for internal security in Germany and provide further evidence of the dangers posed by extremist violence. Chancellor Olaf Scholz and other politicians have expressed horror at what happened and are calling for a comprehensive clarification of the circumstances.
