Allotment garden lease in Schwerin increases by 54 percent-gardeners in turmoil!

Schwerin. A shocking prank for garden friends in Schwerin! In a drastic decision, the city plans to increase the lease for allotment gardens by an outrageous 54 percent! From January 2025, the passionate gardeners have to pay a whopping 18.52 cents per square meter instead of the Läppische 12 cents. This increase is not only the highest in the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania region, but also causes many small farmers to worry about their beloved gardens.

The basics of this sudden price explosion are based on an expert opinion commissioned by the city to reimburse the lease limit. Depending on the garden area, this increase could cause additional costs between 20 and 40 euros per year. For many passionate gardeners, this means a considerable financial burden. Frank Westphal, Managing Director of the Schwerin allotment garden association, emphasizes that the basic costs for everyday life are also increasing and the new lease prices are a real challenge for many.

Schweriner Association defends itself against the price increase

The allotment garden association has accused the city a lack of transparency, among other things. Westphal criticizes that they had only accidentally found out about the report that has been available for over a year. The new pricing is based on average market prices for fruit and vegetable cultivation, but the validity of this data is publicly questioned. The city, on the other hand, defends the increase and emphasizes that this has been the first adjustment since 2014. The decision will be made on November 11 by the city representatives, but the new price list is already printed on the annual invoices for 2025. A secret attack on the gardeners? The waves hit up, the time is pounding!
