Wolves conquer the lake plate: new packs and explosive conflicts!

The wolf population in the southern lake plate is booming! In 2024, two new wolf packs in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania were detected, as the latest data of the wolf monitoring show. On the current card, which documents the status of October 2023, the packs "Usadel" between Neustrelitz and Neubrandenburg and "Satow" are recorded east of Lake Plauer. While the pack of "Wokuhl" has apparently disappeared, the region could soon accommodate more wolves, since a wolf couple was spotted in the Feldberg lake landscape and between the goods and Malchin.

But not everything is rosy! Environmental and Agriculture Minister Till Backhaus (SPD) warns of illegal kills of wolves that have taken place in the Feldberg Lake Landscape in the past. "Illegal withdrawals must have occurred because the pack structures and the locations have changed," said Backhaus. Despite his condemnation of such practices, he calls for the wolf to defuse the inventory regulation in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, to defuse the conflicts associated with the growing population. The minister strives to downgrade the protection status to facilitate the removal of wolves.

Call and measures

In the municipalities concerned, the call for more control is getting louder. The municipality of Feldberger Lake landscape has repeatedly made applications for the removal of wolves, but without success. Mayor Constance von Buchwaldt (SPD) recently appealed to the Federal Environment Ministry to draw attention to the numerous incidents with wolves in her community. Thomas Diener (CDU), member of the state parliament, also warns of an “worse improvement” and demands effective measures to stabilize the inventory. The reports on wolf attacks, even in urban outskirts, increase and increase the urgency of the situation.

There are currently 19 wolf packs in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and four, which temporarily commut to the country. Eight to nine packs have settled in the south of the lake plate, and ten wolf pairs in the state have been detected. The situation remains tense, and the discussion about dealing with the growing wolf population will continue to worsen.
