First lung center in the Lake District: Successful patient care!

The lung center has made important progress in the Mecklenburg Lake District region. After just eight months since its opening, the center can now report that it meets the new legal minimum requirements for performing anatomical resections for lung cancer. It is necessary for clinics to perform at least 75 such complex procedures per year in order to maintain approval for such operations in the future.

These services are provided at the Dietrich Bonhoeffer Clinic, and the statistics to date show that the target has been successfully achieved when combining the figures from the second half of 2023 and the first half of 2024. What is important is that patients in the region now receive high-quality care directly on site, saving them long journeys to larger centers. “

Interdisciplinary collaboration in focus

A central goal of the Lung Center is to ensure high-quality care based on current scientific findings. This also includes continuous training for specialists. The network's third further training recently took place in Neubrandenburg, which dealt with the topic of lung metastases. These can occur not only with lung cancer, but also as a result of other cancers.

Doctors from various disciplines, including urology, gynecology, otolaryngology and oncology, came together to discuss the risk of lung metastases from their respective perspectives. Together, the most appropriate treatment option is determined for each affected patient, which can be either surgical, radiotherapeutic or systemic. Interventional radiology procedures can also be integrated into therapy in an interdisciplinary manner.

The success of the training series is reflected in the comprehensive expertise that is built up within the lung center. Work is already underway on the next event, which will take place on November 6th at the Amsee Pulmonary Clinic in Waren. The focus here is on pulmonary emphysema and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) – two diseases that often occur in parallel.

The Lung Center has joined the Pulmonary Emphysema Register, which underlines the importance of research and data collection in this area.

Continuous development and adaptation to new medical standards as well as close cooperation between the specialist departments are crucial for the success and future of the lung center. These advances are not only important for the clinic itself, but above all for the patients who rely on reliable, high-quality care.
