Wittenförden is fighting for a new K66: renovation is finally imminent!

The district road 66, also known as “Route 66”, which runs through the tranquil town of Wittenförden, has had serious deficiencies for years. The condition of the asphalted road has noticeably deteriorated, causing residents and Mayor Matthias Eberhardt to become increasingly concerned. “It's a catastrophe,” said Eberhardt, who describes the situation in detail as untenable and reports that when it rains, water collects on the streets, leading to small lakes.

The problem is not new. Those responsible in the community have been campaigning for the necessary renovation for a long time. The Ludwigslust-Parchim district reacted to the grievances last summer and ordered a speed limit of 30 kilometers per hour for this section in order to increase the safety of road users.

Preparations for the expansion of the K66

Now something finally seems to be moving in the matter. The district has taken the first steps towards renovation and is planning to hire an engineering firm to create comprehensive traffic planning. This planning achieved will play a key role in introducing the development of the local location as part of the district's future budget planning.

The planned expansion covers a section of around 1.6 kilometers that is in particularly poor condition and at the same time one of the busiest of the approximately 1,000-kilometer-long district road network. The inadequate asphalt surface and the partially missing and dilapidated drainage systems increase the need for rapid action.

Planned expansions and financing

A central goal of the project is to widen the road to at least six meters. The first cost estimate is around four million euros - an amount that is causing concern for Mayor Eberhardt. Given other major financial burdens, such as the construction of a new daycare center, the cost-sharing agreement for the new sidewalk is becoming a real challenge for the municipal budget.

The new plans also call for a wider sidewalk of at least 2.50 meters, which should be accessible to pedestrians and cyclists. However, the feasible plan does not provide for a separate cycle path, which makes mobility in the community even more difficult because the development is too close to the road and there is no space for additional paths.

At the moment it remains uncertain when the construction work will actually begin. The starting signal depends on the upcoming planning, which is associated with securing financing and the necessary approvals. Mayor Eberhardt emphasizes the importance of finally making progress to improve safety and quality of life for residents. “It is crucial that something happens now,” was his urgent appeal.
