Ludwigslust-Parchim: millions of millions after devastating forest fires!

The district of Ludwigslust-Parchim receives more than four million euros from the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania to cover special burdens that have accumulated in recent years. These financial resources are primarily intended for combating the forest fires in the summer of 2023 on the former military training area near Lübtheen and in the Viezer Heide near Hagenow as well as for measures against the African swine plague, which caused high costs of around 3.7 million euros in the district. The swine plague was first detected here in November 2021, and the corresponding blocking measures were canceled two years later, such as NDR reported.

intensive extinguishing work and disaster

On June 12, 2023, a total of two forest fires broke out near Lübtheen and Hagenow, which in the following days pose significant challenges for the emergency services. District Administrator Stefan Sternberg called out a disaster due to the rapidly spreading flames in the Lübtheen region and ordered the evacuation of the village of Volzrade. In the following days, the fires were largely contained by using over 2270 forces, including the fire brigade, THW and Bundeswehr. Despite the ammunition burden in the affected areas, the damage could be limited to around 100 hectares in Lübtheen and 47 hectares in Hagenow, which was also achieved by quickly taken measures and the existing fire trucks, such as Circle Ludwigslust-Parchim emphasized.

The Situation has now stabilized and District Administrator Sternberg announced the abolition of the disaster alarm for the Lübtheen region. However, the strongly patrolled areas remain closed to the general public to ensure the aftercare work and the handling of the ammunition burden. The evacuation of Volzrade was also lifted because the fire is under control, but locals are instructed not to enter the affected areas for the time being.
