Vorpommern-Rügen District Council: Wind power debate is heating up people's minds!

On October 14, 2024, the district council of the Vorpommern-Rügen district met for a crucial meeting in which explosive topics were discussed. After the opening and the usual formalities, including the determination of the quorum, we moved on to the heated residents' question time, where concerned citizens had their say. A central issue: the alleged closure of the hospital in Bergen in 2028. When asked about these rumors, the district administrator vehemently rejected any plans in this context.

A hotly debated topic was the use of wind power in the district. A proposal from the CDU parliamentary group to reduce planned wind power areas caused anger and was rejected after a heated debate. Other controversial points revolved around the reimbursement of expenses for district council members and delays in construction projects. The district administrator promised to provide citizens with timely updates. The focus was also on the tense budget situation and the urgency of austerity measures: “We are facing a dramatic deterioration,” warned the district administrator urgently.

Decisions and rejections

Other points of discussion included the LEFT's application for financial support for the district, which was rejected, and the preservation of dental care, which was referred to the social committee. A pioneering step: the acceptance of the application to preserve the Sassnitz-Trelleborg ferry line was applauded. Surprisingly, applications to review the Corona policy and to deal with gun bans in shared accommodation were not heard and rejected.

The meeting ended at 9:00 p.m., but not without a non-public meeting taking place afterwards. An area of tension in which the district's residents must continue to keep their finger on the pulse of current developments!
