Cardinal Marx praises concrete: a film about church and questions of faith!
München, Deutschland - Munich, December 20, 2024-the German Cardinal Reinhard Marx praised Edward Berger's new cinema thriller in the highest tones. At a meeting in the Munich press club, the Archbishop of Munich and Freising said that the film was not anti -church, but rather illuminated relevant discussions within the church. Marx was particularly impressed by the acting performance by Ralph Fiennes, who plays an doubtful cardinal. "Oscar -driving!" Commented Marx and emphasized the profound research by the author Robert Harris, on whose novel the film is based. The cardinal revealed that he read the book years ago and even recommended Pope Francis with the words: "The dead Pope are." With a smile, Marx remembered the past elections in the conclave, in which decisions were quickly made, and admitted that longer and difficult discussions were quite conceivable as they are shown in the film.
Synodal challenges in view
In another context, Marx recently dealt with the results of the global synod. Although the results published by four bishops were not discussed at the autumn general meeting of the Bavarian Bishops' Conference, the cardinal remains optimistic. "I don't know the explanation in the wording, but I have a lot to do," he said, announcing that the German bishops will continue to discuss the challenges that arise from the synod in the coming constant council. In the explanation of the bishops, including prominent names such as Cardinal Woelki, the fundamental criticism of the discussions in Germany was again addressed, with the call for their own reversal. Marx emphasized that many questions about the synod remained open and campaigned for a synodal church in which as many believers as possible - especially women and young people - can actively help shape. These topics, such as "women in offices" and "sexuality", are not only important locally, but also have to be discussed at a global level, says Marx.
