Wiesbaden counts the future: new bicycle traffic counters started!
In the state capital Wiesbaden, two new counties for cycling were successfully put into operation. While one of the counting points along the Gustav-Stresemann ring between Gartenfeldstraße and Mainzer Strasse is positioned, the second is located in Bertramstraße bicycle road between the 1st Ring and Zimmermannstraße. The importance of these counting points goes far beyond the mere recording of cyclists and is in the context of the efforts of more environmentally friendly mobility.
At the new counting points, it is shown in real time how many cyclists have been traveling in both directions since the beginning of the day and the beginning of the year. The display also provides information about the current time and outside temperature. Modern laser cante technology is used for recording the cyclists, which makes an invasive procedure, such as grinding the road asphalt. Since commissioning in early August, almost 33,500 cyclists have already been recorded on the Gustav-Stresemann-Ring, while the counting point on Bertramstrasse was only officially opened on Friday, October 11th.
bicycle traffic and air pollination plan
This initiative is part of the "SOTORMPACTIT for the air resistance plan to avert a diesel driving ban", which the city council decided on September 6, 2018. The aim of the package is to increase the proportion of bicycle traffic from currently 5.7 to 10.4 percent. Bicycle traffic counts are an indispensable part of traffic planning because they help to analyze the city's mobility and to develop appropriate measures. Not only bicycle traffic, but also car traffic and pedestrian frequency are recorded.
A comprehensive and reliable data basis is of great importance for the city of Wiesbaden. The data collected help to recognize the need for further infrastructure adjustments and to assess the effectiveness of existing measures. They also enable the changing mobility behavior to be reacted to. For example, weather conditions or traffic situations can be taken into account in order to develop more optimal solutions for cycle paths, traffic light systems and other traffic technology aspects.
additional counting points and the visibility of cycling
In addition to the urban counting points, the state of Hesse also installs further counting points in the Wiesbaden city area. The Hessian Minister of Economic Affairs and Transport Kaweh Mansori presented a new counting point on Uferstrasse in Biebrich in April 2024. This is one of a total of 230 counting points that are set up nationwide. By the end of the year, an additional four counting points in Wiesbaden are to be set up in order to obtain an even more comprehensive picture of cycling. Citizens have the opportunity to access the collected data of the state counting positions online at www.radaten-hessen.de.These new counting points are part of a nationwide project for the systematic recording of cycling in Hesse. The counting data is not only important for planning and improving the infrastructure, but they also make the increase in cycling and its positive effects on people and the environment. For many cyclists, it is motivating to see on the display how many other cyclists are on the road. The city of Wiesbaden plans to make the collected data accessible to the public in the same way as a presentation by the state of Hesse, which underlines the value of each individual bike ride for the city.
