Romrod commemorates together: a strong sign of peace and democracy!

On Memorial Day 2024, the city of Romrod (Vogelsbergkreis) experienced an impressive commemoration that combined the citizens of all five districts. For the first time, the victim of war and tyranny was commemorated. The festive kick-off took place in the Evangelical Church in Ober-Breidenbach, where Pastor Tullius-Tomášek, Mayor Ulrike Geisel and Mayor Hauke Schmehl led the ceremony. Supported by the Bundeswehrer Heiko Loetz and Johannes Rausch from the local advisory board, a moving connection was created from personal stories and historical reflections.

A highlight of the event was the impressive report by Heiko Loetz on his foreign missions. His experiences illustrated the challenges that our soldiers look forward to, and the essential importance of commitment to peace. Ulrike Geisel emphasized that peace and democracy are often taken for granted, but are a privilege that has been denied in the past. She called on acting actively for these values and defending them. Pastor Tullius-Tomášek encouraged those present to consider diversity and differences in opinion as a strength that should be lived in a respectful cooperation.

After the service, the participants gathered at the memorial in the Ober-Breidenbach cemetery for laid out wreath. In his speech, Mayor Schmehl warned that peace and democracy are not a matter of course: "The Memorial Day not only reminds us of the horrors of the past, but also asks us to stand up brave for our values in the presence." The musical accompaniment by the Ober-Breidenbach trombone choir gave the ceremony a solemn setting. The local mayors of the other parts also accepted wreaths that were later laid down in the respective cemeteries.

This event was more than just a moment of pausing; It was an outlook on the future. In the coming year, the Memorial Day will be celebrated in Zell on the occasion of the 1200th anniversary. Romrod thus shows that commemoration is a connecting task that focuses on peace, democracy and cohesion not only as historical terms, but as current values.
