Marburg's concert hall: Compliance with fire protection measures remains a challenge
Biegenstraße 11, 35037 Marburg, Deutschland - Marburg, a place full of history and cultural heritage, faces a challenge: the beautiful concert hall of the Philipps University, located in the art building, has been closed for years-and for good reasons. According to op-marburg.de are taken to meet fire protection regulations. The hall is predestined for smaller concerts, but since the closure in 2014 there have been no events. This is a bitter loss for many classic lovers, because the available premises in Marburg are rare and the need for suitable performance locations increases.
political efforts for reopening
The CDU politician Birgit von Bargen has contacted the cultural committee according to Uni-marburg.de to make the concert hall usable again. An idea for the connection of the hall to the neighboring Erwin-Piscator-Haus via a jetty failed due to the veto of the State Office for Monument Protection and construction problems. The Mayor Dr. Thomas Spies explained that the smoke heat deduction systems that have been required since 2014 are not available, which makes the hall unusable for larger events.
The Philipps University plans to examine the opportunity to make the concert hall accessible again in the upcoming building regulation. The estimated cost of conversion is around 1.5 million euros, with financing by the city of Marburg being considered a potential gift for the 500th anniversary of the university in 2027. It is currently still uncertain whether the use of the concert hall can be restored as an important cultural place in Marburg. The hall with space for 301 visitors in the art building is expected to be closed until further notice.
