Frankfurt in the purchasing power ranking: surprising placement for Hessen!

Offenbach, Deutschland - Purchasing power ranking: Offenbach in last place!

The latest numbers are there and they are shocking! A ranking of the Institute of German Economy (IW) shows that purchasing power in Hesse is extremely different. While the Hochtaunuskreis with an impressive real income of 33,011 euros per capita is enthroned in third place in the Federal Republic, it looks bleak for Offenbach. With only 19,022 euros per inhabitant, the city lands in last place - 400th place! Here a low income applies to high living costs, which makes the situation of the residents unbearable.

But Frankfurt am Main cannot really be happy. Despite the high salaries in the banking metropolis, the city is thrown back to 389th place through its exorbitant living costs. The Frankfurt skyline may shine, but the purchasing power of the citizens remains in the shade. The housing costs are the decisive factor for this dramatic differences, and they pull the purchasing power into the basement.

Hessen: A land of extreme

The differences in purchasing power are particularly striking in Hesse. While the Hochtaunuskreis takes up the top position, cities like Offenbach and Frankfurt are fighting with the consequences of their high living costs. The Main-Taunus-Kreis and the Rheingau-Taunus district do better in comparison, while Kassel cannot shine with 379. The calculations are based on the income figures of the statistical offices and a regional price index that was created from millions of data from 2023. Hessen is once more than a country of extremes, where prosperity and poverty are close together.
