A rapid but fortunately minor accident occurred in Kassel-Nord on Tuesday morning. At 6:15 a.m., a 54-year-old man lost control of his BMW and crashed head-on into a tree on Bunsenstrasse with full force. The impact caused the car to burst into flames, but the driver managed to free himself from the burning car with minor injuries. Paramedics took him to a nearby hospital as a precaution.

Witnesses reported that the driver had overtaken several vehicles at excessive speed before the accident occurred. The initial on-site investigation revealed that the 54-year-old was under the influence of alcohol, which was confirmed by a breath alcohol test of around 1 per mille. As a result, his driving license was confiscated and he now faces charges of endangering traffic.

Drama behind the scenes

The BMW, a total loss of around 80,000 euros, had to be towed away. An assessment is still pending on the cost of the damage to the tree. The consequences of the accident were noticeable: the accident site had to be closed until 7:30 a.m., which resulted in significant disruptions to rush hour traffic. While the rescue and extinguishing work was underway, investigations into the exact cause of the accident continued. Will drunk driving have further consequences for the driver? The police are continuing to investigate.
