Forggensee: Germany's largest reservoir enchants with turquoise blue water!
Lake Forggensee in the Allgäu, a true natural jewel, attracts numerous visitors every year with its brilliant turquoise water. This impressive body of water, which is located near the Alps, is not only a popular destination for vacationers, but also a record holder: With an area of 15.2 square kilometers, Lake Forggensee is the largest reservoir in Germany, surpassing even the Vatican City more than 30 times!
From June to October, Lake Forggensee is fully dammed and offers a variety of water sports options. Sailing, surfing and canoeing are just some of the activities available here. If you want to take it easy, you can enjoy a relaxing boat trip on the sparkling water. But after October 15th, the lake is drained and the bottom of the water becomes visible - a winding landscape that is perfect for walking.
The largest reservoirs in Germany
The Forggensee tops the list of the largest reservoirs in Germany, followed by the Edersee in Hesse with 11.8 square kilometers and the Möhne Dam in North Rhine-Westphalia with 10.67 square kilometers. These impressive figures make Lake Forggensee a unique destination for nature and sports lovers.
The region around Lake Forggensee also offers breathtaking views of the foothills of the Alps and numerous hiking trails. The nearby town of Füssen is known for its charming old town, while the famous Neuschwanstein Castle, a landmark of Germany, sits southeast of the lake. Despite the beauty of Lake Forggensee and its surroundings, there have recently been some challenges: After a thunderstorm, the access to the fairytale castle had to be temporarily closed due to a mudslide. But the fascination of this region remains unbroken.
