Griesheim discovered rare treasure: 1959 US military newspaper found!
Griesheim, Deutschland - An exciting find for the Griesheim city archive: A heavy band full of editions by the legendary US military newspaper "Stars & Stripes" from 1959 is back! Members of the museum association came across this treasure while cleaning up at the August-Euler airfield in Darmstadt. Here the editorial team of the newspaper had its seat for over 60 years until it moved in 2008.
The old editions of the military newspaper are now real rarities! The newly discovered Wälzer weighs almost 5 kilograms and was in a miserable condition, heavily dirty and worn. But thanks to the support group for museums and monument preservation in the district of Darmstadt-Dieburg, the pages now shine again in new splendor. Around 800 euros were invested for cleaning and restoration - a small price for so much history!
a piece of history back in Griesheim
The return of these expenses is not only a profit for the city archive, but also a significant piece of contemporary history that documents the connection between the USA and Germany during the post -war period. The "Stars & Stripes" was not only an information medium for the US troops, but also a window to the world for local people. Griesheim can be lucky to have such a piece of history in its walls!
