Escape after crash in Barmbek: Police are looking for witnesses to the accident!
In the early morning hours of October 18, 2024, there was a serious traffic accident in Hamburg-Barmbek-Süd. At around 3:05 a.m. two vehicles, a Mercedes and a Seat Cupra, collided on Hamburger Straße. According to initial findings, both cars were driving towards Barmbeker Markt at what appeared to be excessive speed.
The Seat Cupra, which was in front of the Mercedes, braked abruptly at a red light. This resulted in the Mercedes driving into the Seat vehicle. The impact was so strong that the Seat flipped over and came to rest on a traffic island.
Injured and driver escapes
In the accident, the 20-year-old Mercedes driver and two passengers aged 20 and 24 were slightly injured. Rescue workers were quickly on the scene to care for the injured. One passenger even had to be taken to a hospital to receive further medical attention.
A specialized traffic accident team (VD 23) took over the investigation on site. An expert and a drone were used to reconstruct the accident in detail. The intersection of Hamburger Straße/Dehnhaide had to be completely closed while the accident was being investigated, which led to significant traffic delays.
A light pole that was severely damaged by the impact caused the traffic lights at the intersection to fail. Repair work is currently underway and is expected to take some time.
Due to suspicions of illegal car racing, the police have launched an investigation. As part of these investigations, the affected vehicles were seized and the Mercedes driver's driver's license was confiscated. The East Traffic Directorate (VD 33) is now taking over the further investigation.
The Hamburg police are calling on all witnesses who observed the accident or who can provide information about the fleeing driver of the Seat Cupra to call 040 4286-56789 or go to a police station. Clarifying this incident is extremely important in order to continue to ensure road safety.
