Violence in shopping centers is increasing drastically: 75% of the perpetrators are migrants!
The security situation in German shopping centers will have worsened significantly in 2024. According to a report by exxpress.at A total of 18,276 offenses were registered, which corresponds to an increase of 32 percent compared to the previous year. These alarming numbers highlight the dangers that customers and employees currently face in these environments.
What is particularly worrying is the high proportion of perpetrators with a migrant background, which was 75 percent in 2024, after 73 percent were recorded in 2023. The offenses include a wide range of violent acts, including 2,905 cases involving knives or tools, an increase of 11 percent. Drug use was reported in 1,389 cases, a dramatic increase of 45 percent. The violence leaves many injured; 235 people, including security guards, staff and visitors, were injured, representing an increase of 25 percent.
Different forms of crime
The increase in crime is diverse and includes bomb threats and ATM blasts. In 2024, 46 bomb threats and 11 cases of ATM explosions were documented. Vandalism, gang violence and sexual assault are also commonplace retail-news.de reported. 945 cases of vandalism, 611 cases of gang violence and 105 cases of sexual harassment were recorded. Overall, there was a potential risk in shopping and retail parks, contributing to a feeling of uncertainty among visitors and employees.
Mall security costs have also increased in response to rising crime. In 2024 they increased by 21 percent to a total of 41 million euros. Faced with these rising costs, many security companies are taking measures such as using stab-proof vests for their employees. However, despite the high number of incidents, the likelihood of a serious attack is relatively low, according to the Global Center for Security and Safety (GCSP).
Trade Association and Municipal Security
The German Trade Association (HDE) is calling for noticeable consequences against shoplifting, which caused economic damage of almost three billion euros in 2024. This number represents an increase of 20 percent compared to the previous year. However, the crime statistics data show a slight decrease in reported shoplifting, which points to the problem that, according to estimates, up to 98 percent of crimes remain unreported. This situation triggers discussions about the need to link social prevention, urban planning and trade policy more effectively.
In summary, the persistently high number of incidents and the increasing pressure on security resources represent a serious challenge for German shopping centers. The developments in 2025 are already showing initial feedback that indicates a further deterioration of the situation. The discussion about security, the role of migration and inner cities will remain relevant, also initiated by political voices such as that of Chancellor Friedrich Merz.
