Healthy soils, healthy people: Information tour of solidarity agriculture starts

The Solidarity Agriculture Mülheim (Solawi) association plans to hold some information events in Mülheim and neighboring cities at the end of October 2024. The tour has the motto “Healthy soils, healthy people” and aims to bring the values and objectives of the club closer to home.

With an innovative approach, Solawi wants to put the spotlight on communal cultivation and harvest sharing, where a group of people share the financial costs of growing healthy fruits and vegetables. This enables a direct connection between the production and consumption of food.

The event will kick off on October 27th in Wandelwinkel on Bachstrasse, where the first free information events will be held. These actions will continue until mid-November in cities such as Duisburg, Oberhausen and Essen. Solawi also plans to be present with her information stands at various pumpkin festivals in Mülheim in order to inform even more people about her philosophy.

The idea behind Solawi

The principle of solidarity is essential to the concept of solidarity farming. Those interested in becoming a member pay a fixed monthly fee for a whole year. This finances the various expenses of a vegetable farm, including seeds, land rental and wages of agricultural employees. In return, members regularly receive fresh vegetables as “harvest participants”. This system enables a more sustainable form of cultivation because the economic pressure of market prices is not the decisive influencing factor.

In addition to the information events, the association is offering weekly coffee parties from October 24th, which take place every Thursday from 4:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the Makroscope cultural center on Friedrich-Ebert-Straße 48. Here, interested parties have the opportunity to find out more about the work of the association and its offerings in a relaxed atmosphere. In addition, Solawi is planning paid workshops in which ancient cultural canning techniques will be taught. An example of this is making Korean kimchi from home-grown vegetables.

For members, this is not only an opportunity to source fresh food, but also to actively immerse themselves in a sustainable form of agriculture and strengthen the connection to the growing process. The numerous events and workshops also offer non-members the chance to gain an insight into the world of solidarity agriculture and, if necessary, to become part of this groundbreaking concept themselves.
