On November 9th we commemorate the terrible November pogroms of 1938, a dark chapter in Germany's history. On the occasion of this 86th anniversary, Beate Rudolf, director of the German Institute for Human Rights, expresses powerful words. She emphasizes how important it is to honor the trust of Jewish people in Germany, especially in light of the Shoah. This trust is a strong sign of the responsibility of society and the state to protect Jewish life and combat anti-Semitism.
A call to responsibility
Rudolf reminds us that according to Article 3 Paragraph 3 of the Basic Law, the state is obliged to protect all people from discrimination and violence. “The people in Germany are called upon to stand up for the freedom and rights of Jewish people,” she says emphatically. In many places - be it at work, in the neighborhood, in sports, in schools or on social media - we are all called upon to defend ourselves against anti-Semitic statements and attacks.
The November pogroms were a horrific scenario that must be remembered - not least in view of the current geopolitical tensions that dominate political discourse. Rudolf warns: “We must speak out loudly when human dignity is violated or hatred and prejudice are stirred up.” This appeal is more urgent than ever, especially at the present time, when political disputes over the conflict in Israel and Gaza are heating up many minds. A clear no to anti-Semitism and racism is not only a duty, but also a necessity for a civilized society.
