Peace light shines in the European Parliament: Hope in uncertain times
Laimgrubengasse 10, 1060 Wien, Österreich - On December 17, 2024, the peace light from Bethlehem solemnly shone in the European Parliament, an event that has been of great importance for 29 years. Angelika Winzig, the deputy head of delegation of the ÖVP in the European Parliament, emphasized that this light bears an important message of peace into the world and reminds us of the values that embodies the European Union. "In many parts of the world, people suffer from war and violence, and peace light encourages us to stand up to them," said Winzig. Children from Upper Austria usually travel to Bethlehem to ignite the light itself, which was not possible this year due to the current situation in the Middle East. Instead, three peace light children kept the light safely kept in Christkindl near Steyr, before they brought it to Strasbourg with around 100 pupils, like a light of hope and solidarity
The President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, praised the symbolic power of peace light in her speech. "It reminds us that peace is not a matter of course," said Metsola, referring to the dramatic conflicts that the world currently shake. Her appeal: finally an end to the suffering of many people. The Austrian Council of Europe was also considered with the light; With their musical accompaniment, pupils contributed to the festive atmosphere. Winzig emphasized that the peace light as part of a "wonderful Austrian tradition" not only symbolizes peace, but also underlines Austria's commitment to human rights, as described in detail.
Peace light has been a central part of the Christmas season since its introduction in 1986 and is distributed worldwide by scouts. Every year a child from Upper Austria ignites the light in the birth grotto of Jesus, and it is then passed on around the globe. This tradition connects people and cultures and is celebrated in many countries, including Germany and Austria. This year's light not only brings the symbol of peace to the hearts of many, but also creates a connecting message in difficult times, emphasize the organizers and supporters of the campaign.
