Erlangen and Beşiktaş: Disaster protection in the sign of cooperation!
As part of a joint project, known as Ortak, the BRK district association Erlangen-Höchstadt recently received a visit from the Turkish twin town of Beşiktaş. This city is located in a region that is particularly susceptible to earthquakes. After the devastating vibrations in February 2023, cooperation in the area of civil and disaster protection and the establishment of a search dog squadron was launched.
The main goal of this initiative is to educate the population in Beşiktaş about important measures of civil and disaster protection and to build up a common expertise through the exchange between the cities. "We want to learn from each other and expand our network," emphasizes a representative of the BRK. The implementation of these plans not only looks at theory, but also at practical training opportunities on site.
practical training in Germany
During their visit to Germany, two dog trainers from Beşiktaş received the opportunity to experience training in realistic exercises with experienced multipliers of the BRK, Ute Wittig and Thomas Mach. The search with rescue dogs in collapsed buildings on a rubble area was in the foreground. Accompanied by an interpreter, the Turkish dog handlers learned how to optimally use the special techniques for searching for space and debris.Another highlight of the visit was the presence of the director of civil and disaster protection of the city of Beşiktaş, who took part in various demonstrations and lectures together with his colleagues. Their focus was on the structures and processes of the BRK disaster protection in Erlangen. Among other things, information on the establishment of the emergency services was presented, and the Erlangen mountain rescue service demonstrated its equipment and the use of drones in use.
The lectures by Prof. Christoph Tiebel, who works as the state specialist service manager for the rescue dogs at the BRK, were particularly informative. He explained the techniques and methods of rescue dog work. The presentations of Hatice Bilgin, an emergency paramedic who gave valuable insight into the practical implementation of her knowledge were transcribed.
technical equipment and possible uses
A tour of the spatial conditions included the presentation of the LKKLD vehicle of the mountain rescue service, which has special equipment for searching for missing people. The presentation of the drone technology emphasized the most modern options for disaster relief. Other devices that were shown included a device car, which is designed for the care of up to 200 people, and special mobility vehicles that are used in rough terrain.
In addition, the readiness information about their special all-terrain vehicles (ATVS) and various emergency vehicles such as the Lada off-road vehicle, which can be of crucial importance in the event of a crisis. The support unit for the medical operations management also presented its communication center, which is essential for efficient missions at larger areas of work. The Wasserwacht Erlangen was also represented with vehicles and boats that are well equipped for emergencies on the water.
In summary, this visit was able to take an important exchange that not only extends to the directly involved people, but also promises long -term positive effects for the affected communities in both countries. Hopefully the implementation of the methods learned in Beşiktaş will help to significantly increase the efficiency of disaster protection in this endangered region.
