Construction site crime and its effects
In general, construction site crime is increasing in Germany, which brings with it a variety of financial losses and security risks. According to a report by haufe.de The construction industry is particularly affected by dis-steeling, property damage and vandalism. Small craft businesses and self-employed craftsmen in particular suffer from these incidents. Missing materials and tools can not only jeopardize projects, but also cause additional costs.
A study shows that about a third of companies in the construction industry consider theft to be a serious problem, while 90% of the companies surveyed have experienced theft. In 2022, around 26,000 thefts on construction sites were reported in Germany, with tools, building materials, metals and expensive construction equipment often being stolen. The security situation is further exacerbated by manipulated construction equipment and remote safety devices.
To prevent such incidents, preventive measures are crucial. Recommended protective measures include construction fences, surveillance systems, alarm systems and security personnel. Valuable tools should be stored in lockable containers, and regular inventory checks are important to detect theft early. After an incident, thorough inspection is essential to identify and document potential security risks.
